Background of the Study

Research skills are essential in nursing education, enabling students to critically evaluate medical literature, engage in evidence-based practice, and contribute to healthcare advancements. Research training equips nursing students with the ability to analyze data, conduct systematic reviews, and apply research findings to clinical practice (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2024).

However, many nursing students in Nigeria receive minimal formal research training, leading to challenges in academic writing, data analysis, and scientific reasoning (Okonkwo et al., 2023). The University of Uyo Teaching Hospital has introduced research skills training to enhance students’ academic performance and prepare them for evidence-based practice. This study evaluates the impact of research training on students’ academic success and their ability to engage in scholarly activities.

Statement of the Problem

A major gap in nursing education is the inadequate emphasis on research skills, which hinders students from effectively engaging in scientific inquiry and evidence-based decision-making (Adebayo & Hassan, 2024). Many students struggle with literature reviews, data interpretation, and academic writing, negatively affecting their coursework and research projects.

At the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, research skills training has been integrated into the nursing curriculum, but its effectiveness in enhancing students' academic performance remains unclear. This study aims to assess whether research training improves students’ ability to conduct research, enhances their academic performance, and increases their confidence in scholarly writing.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of research skills training on students’ academic performance.
  2. To examine nursing students’ confidence and competence in conducting research after training.
  3. To identify challenges in implementing research training in nursing education.

Research Questions

  1. How does research skills training impact students' academic performance?
  2. What is the effect of research training on students’ confidence and competence in conducting research?
  3. What challenges are associated with integrating research training into nursing education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Research skills training does not significantly improve students’ academic performance.
  2. Research training has no significant effect on students’ confidence and competence in conducting research.
  3. There are no significant challenges in implementing research skills training in nursing education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nursing students at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Limitations include variations in students’ prior research exposure and differences in faculty expertise in research methodology.

Definitions of Terms

  • Research Skills Training: The process of teaching students how to conduct scientific inquiry, analyze data, and engage in academic writing.
  • Academic Performance: The extent to which students achieve learning objectives, as measured by grades and research output.
  • Evidence-Based Practice: The use of the best available research evidence to guide clinical decision-making.
